I admit it, sometimes I can be quite the shopaholic! When you shop online, it seems like it's not so bad (until you look at your bank statement! LOL!) Too Old for Dolls?

I read an interesting article this morning about children "growing out of dolls" at a much earlier age, some as early as age 7!!! I couldn't believe this when I read it, but I have to agree that it's probably true. Being in the doll business, I have noticed 9 - 11 year old girls will stop and oooh and aaah over the items, but most of the time they will not purchase. I have had parents come up to me almost apologetically, to say their preteen is no longer interested in dolls.

I've been a doll "collector" since I was 37 years old (about 8 years or so). As an adult I find that doll play is relaxing, stimulating (to my imagination) and fun. It's an activity that I love to share with my daughter. I love naming my dolls and creating personas for them! No I'm not a nutcase, it's just something I enjoy doing and my daughter does as well!

So I'm wondering, what are your thoughts on this? How old is too old to play with dolls? In the article, it says that companies like MGA, Disney and Toys R Us are creating more mature looking dolls (preteen/teen rather than baby/toddler) to appeal to 5 - 11 year olds. Do you think mature looking dolls is the answer? I'm really curious to know your thoughts!

Now I've been to the American Girl Store in New York, at Christmastime and it was crowded then. Book Review: Lanie (American Girl of Today)

About the Book:
Ten-year-old Lanie loves science and nature, but she has a problem: she's an "outside" girl with an "inside" family. She longs get out and go camping, but they all want to stay home. It wouldn't be so bad if her best friend was around, but she's halfway around the world, living out their dream of studying wildlife. Lanie feels she never gets to have any adventures -- anywhere. But when her favorite aunt comes to stay, Lanie discovers that the wonders of nature are everywhere -- even in her own backyard.

My Review:
I read this book because I run a book club for my daughter and her friends. This was the first book that we read for the club.

You can tell from the start that Lanie is an "outside" person. She love bugs, she loves helping nature, she loves being outside. Unfortunately the rest of her family does not feel the same way. Her mom, dad and two sisters are definitely indoor people. Top that off with the fact that her BFF (another outside person) is temporarily relocated!!! Lanie is not the happiest camper these days!

The book takes us on a journey with Lanie, to help her discover the wonders of nature in her own backyard! At first, she is disappointed because it seems her best friend and also her aunt have some exciting trips and she's stuck at home. After a visit from her aunt, Lanie realizes that there is so much to see right where she is! Lanie goes on adventures and some exciting things happen within her family and around the neighborhood. She even gets her little sister involved!

As I said, I read this with my 9 year old daughter, she LOVED the book. It was fun reading about Lanie and we plan to read the second book as well.

How to Rewig a Doll - Glue Dots Review

Yesterday I wrote about redressing your dolls. It gives them a fresh new look and to be honest, give us doll collector's some quality play time. But redressing your dolls is not the only thing that you can do to bring out your doll's "personality!"

When I first started collecting My Twinn dolls, I wasn't always satisfied with the way they arrived. I didn't always like the hair or the outfit. The outfit part was easy to fix, I just bought a new one. At the time, I didn't realize I could do something about the hair too!

I joined a Yahoo group dedicated to the My Twinn dolls and they taught me all the things I could do to change the doll to my satisfaction. One of the things was rewigging the doll. I was horrified at the thought of ~~scalping~~ removing the wig on one of my babies! But curiosity won out and once I realized how simple it was, I was hooked. I went to sites such as Audrey's Doll gallery to purchase doll sized wigs and so it began.

I'm going to walk you through the steps that I take to change a wig. I'm participating in a contest over at Twitter Moms (http://www.twittermoms.com/forum/topics/2000-in-prizes-up-for-grabs), so I thought this would be a GREAT use of the Glue Dots, and it was! You can visit Glue Dots on Facebook.

1. Meet Caitie, she's a My Twinn doll and she was in need of a makeover. She was in a dusty area of my home and she needed a new wig.

The first thing I did was remove Caitie's old wig. Now this was easy because he wig was not glued on. Her previous dolly mommy had used double sided tape to attach her wig.

2. Double sided tape is VERY sticky and very hard to remove. I used a product called OOPS to remove the double sided tape and residue. Any leftover glue, I scraped off with a butter knife. Then I washed her head with soap and water (be careful not to get cloth bodies wet!) and dried it with a paper towel. I was left with a fairly clean head:

3. Next we tried on a few wigs to see which one we liked best:

or maybe straight with bangs

Decisions Decisions Decisions!!

4. We decided on the wavy with bangs, so I brushed it out until I was satisfied, then turned it inside out. The reason for this is to keep the hair from getting stuck to the glue.

5. Next I covered the doll heat with Glue Dots. In the past I used tacky glue which was VERY messy! I love the Glue Dots because they are easy to apply and cover the whole surface:

6. Once I had her head covered with the glue dots, I SLOWLY rolled the wig on. I gave it a few minutes to "set" then I brushed and styled it:

Dressing your Dolls

Hello everyone,

Once again sorry to have been gone so LONG!! Summer keeps me hopping as my kids are involved in many activities!

If you are a doll collector, you know that one of the most fun things to do is to redress your dolls. My dolls never stay in their original outfits for too long once they arrive at my home! It's fun to see who can wear each others clothes, sort of like BFF's (Best Friends Forever) swapping clothes at a sleepover.

My friend Debbie Garrett, author of the Definitive Guide to Collecting Black Dolls and Black Dolls: A Comprehensive Guide to Celebrating, Collecting, and Experiencing the Passion is well aware of the excitement of redressing a doll and she has been playing again! She was kind enough to share a picture of her Bonnie Lou (by Terri Lee Dolls) dressed in Emily Rose @ Home's Floral Comfort (scroll down)! She looks adorable!!

Junior Book Club

My daughter and I want to start a book club to keep up with summer reading. We were thinking we would do the Addy American Girl Series but I don't think that would keep a bunch of "going into 5th graders" interested.

Some other suggestions are:

Hoot
Lemony Snicket
Diary of a Wimpy Kid I would like to know more about this series!

I also have some historical fiction that I want to read with her. Anything biblical written at her level would be great too! She reads at about the 6th or 7th grade level and will read just about anything! Any other suggestions?

Here's how it works:

1. You tell me the types of doll outfits you or your child are looking for (sports, dressy, sleep time, blue etc.), and your budget.

2. I'll go through my website at www.emilyroseathome.com/margaretrogers and select up to 10 outfits that might be of interest.

3. You select the outfits that you want to purchase and send me your payment information and I will enter the order for you. Alternatively, once you have outfits to select from, you can go to the website and enter the order yourself.

4. If you have friends that also want to order, email me (maggie965@yahoo.com) and we'll make it a party! If we do make it a party, AND you have 10 or more orders, you will get a gift certificate to the store!! If your party totals more than $200, you will also get the free pre selected hostess outfit! Returning to the World of Business Ownership!!

I'm back! Did you miss me? Once I got over my Winter Blues, I took some time to rework my business plan. Yippeee! I have goals!! I really love my business, but I haven't felt I was accomplishing all that much which was discouraging. Taking the time to reenergize and build some goals feels refreshing!

So anyway, I have some news to share with you!

Emily Rose at Home NJ is getting a makeover!! You'll notice in the next few weeks I will be change the look of my blog. I'm shooting for some lovely spring colors and more dolly pics (so you can see our lovely outfits!)

You'll also notice that I removed my store links. This is NOT a bad thing. It's a great thing because we have lots of new stuff planned which will make it so much easier for YOU to do business with us!! We don't want it to be a hassle for you to get our wonderful products.

With our new look and the wonderful surprises we have in store, I will be having a very nice giveaway. I will give you plenty of notice when that is going to happen! You won't want to miss it (just think dolly wardrobe)!!!

While we're waiting on the new stuff (hopefully by mid-May) I'm going to try and share information on caring for your dolls and their clothes. I hope you find this useful.

Finally, my goal is to serve YOU so I need to know what YOU want to see. I have quite a few followers but I don't know many of you. So please tell me a little about you and why you are a follower of this blog and what you would like to see.

As promised, there are some exciting changes going on at Emily Rose At Home. If you have been hanging around here, I know you are familiar with our adorable outfits and beautiful furniture. I enjoy playing with them as much as my daughter. We have loved sharing our products with our friends and customers.

As a Founder at Emily Rose at Home, I have to say this has been an exciting time for me and my daughter. When the opportunity was opened in July 2009, I knew immediately that this was something I wanted to do with my daughter. I am able to work the hours I need to (in other words, work around my childrens' schedules! LOL!). I can schedule parties, do fundraisers, and run my business as I see fit. I've received so much help from the other Founders and even met one in person (Hi Shari!)! We have had live training from Lisa-Marie and that has been a tremendous help! I'm speaking from the heart when I say this is an opportunity I'm so glad I did not pass up.

There's a new girl.. er DOLL in Town!

Hello everyone!

I’m so pleased to share with you a new 18” doll that’s on the market. Her name is Nicole and Debbie Garrett from Black Doll Collecting, graciously shared her pictures with me!

Nicole is aspires to be a doctor and enjoys cheerleading when she’s not studying!

Oh goodness I just love that face, she reminds me so much of my own daughter! I love her hair too!

Nicole is from the Prodigyrls collection, a series of dolls designed by Dr. Daniela Wiggins, who when shopping for dolls for her girls, was disappointed by what was available. So she took matters into her own hands and designed a line of dolls to reflect the values that many of us try to instill in our little girls. Nicole will arrive to you in a doctor's outfit including lab coat! Too cute! Also available now is Janelle who is a chef that instills a healthy way of cooking.

These “gyrls” are too cute and I cannot wait to add them to my collection! Since I’m on a self-imposed six month doll moratorium, I’ll have to wait! Ha! Stupid moratorium!!

The furniture is very sturdy and easy to assemble (if I can do it, you can!!). Today we will focus on our bunk beds!

First we have our Wish Bunk Beds, they are white with pink highlights and so very cute!! And yes the pillows, thin mattress and ladder all come with the beds!!

Next we have the Natural Bamboo Bunk Beds! These are so pretty in a Natural Wood coloring, will go with almost any decor!! These also come with Pillows, blankets and the ladder!

This is EXCITING News! Emily Rose will start carrying the newest 18" Madame Alexander dolls in Late December!! They are so adorable and I know you will love them! I have several of the older Madame Alexander dolls and I LOVE them!

Here are a few that will be available:

They probably won't be here in time for the Holidays which is too bad!

If you can't wait until then, you can get the older versions from Toys R Us, Sears and Costco (Holiday Season only, not available online).

One thing that Emily Rose Doll Clothes does not have is matching outfits for your little girl and American Girl doll or similar 18"dolls. However, there are several companies that do and they are too too cute! Burlington Coat Factory has a line but I don't know the name. Sears and Kohl's just introduced their Dollie & Me line.

We have been missing in action for a few days. We experienced a loss in our family and needed some time to deal with that. Now we are still healing but we are back!! Looking forward to sharing some new outfits and accessories!

Mimi's Corner - October 24

Hi everyone,

It's Mimi. I haven't posted in a while because I have been busy with school and piano. And my brother is in a play so my mom has been driving around a lot!

Yesterday, I had a Girl Scout meeting and we decorated pumpkins. Last night, I cut open the pumpkin and found lots of seeds. This morning I put the seeds in the oven and I baked them. After that I put some salt on them and they tasted so good!

A few weeks ago, we went to a Girl Scout event. Only three of us went even though we have eight girls.

First Mr. Ferry from Happily Ever After in Philadelphia told us about owning a toy shop.

Then Ms. Starr told us about fixing and cleaning dolls.

Also, there was a doll museum by my mom's doll club and we also did stations. The first station was making a paper doll. The paper doll could look like you and that's how I made mine. The next station was to make a scrapbook about the doll museum. Next we took a picture with our dolls and all my friends looked beautiful. Then we made Snappy dolls. The Snappy dolls are dolls you can make all by yourself. You can mix and match skin tones like pink and blue and purple, or regular skin tones. Later, we had snack and watched a movie called Bluette goes to Paris. After the snack (but the movie was still on) we colored pictures again. Finally, we did door prizes. Unfortunately, my friend N, forgot to enter the door prizes!!! But my other friend J, won a porcelain doll and I won a wooden doll highchair. It was so fun! Then it was over and we went home!

Did you know that Disney has a new princess on the block??? Tiana from Disney's The Princess and the Frog is now on toy store shelves and she is a beauty! There are several versions but here are my favorites:

This is the first time I had to sit down and finish my News Around the Doll World. There's a lot to talk about this week.

These dolls are so cute, I'm thinking of ordering one for my friend's grandbaby. Can you believe she's almost FIVE MONTHS old and doesn't have her first doll?!?! Oh the horror!! The company is not doing custom orders until December but they will be doing uploads of these adorable dolls!

I mentioned the Avon Dolls last week, then I found out Sears is also coming out with a line of 18" dolls. Yaay! More dolls to dress. Here is a link to the cuties! This one is my favorite!

I'm pretty sure these are Madame Alexander dolls but I'll have to check when I go to the store. I wonder if Kmart will have them as well since they are essentially Sears?

Great news on the Emily Rose at Home NJ front. We will soon be offering paper doll parties!! I think paper dolls are so fun for the attendees and they will get to cut and color their own dolls. More details will be coming soon!!

Tuesday Around the Doll World - 10/6

There is so much news around the doll world that I'm going to spread it over two days! I wanted to dedicate today to a special artist I found through my google alerts. Her name is Faith and this is her site: Sundrip

You know how something catches your attention and you know it's special but you are not quite sure why? Well that's how I felt when I first came across Faith's dolls. I saw this little cutie in a red hat, her name is Lisa:

Something about her eyes and the serious lips that want to smile, really captured my attention. I HAD to contact the artist and then I knew... she is one special lady.

Here is what Faith Shared with me:

"One of the things I do with my dolls that isn't really heard of is make inner child dolls for African-American children in therapy. Therapy includes physical and emotional therapy. I've made several, some are posted in my doll gallery but others are not. If the person chooses not to have their therapy doll posted I don't. I respect their privacy. The other thing is this, each doll is hand sewn not machine sewn. The faces are hand painted, the hair chosen carefully to fit the desired look and the outfit is chosen carefully. I actually have a wardrobe for future dolls. The amount of thought that goes into each doll is extensive. I thoroughly enjoy making them. The doll you asked about is doll number 16. She's got big brown eyes with a tad bit of gold above them. Her hair is in three pony tails which is a standard black hair style for little girls. She's got little black shoes and a sweet dress. I think the addition that makes her stand out is the red beret. She's currently sitting on my shelf with my personal doll collection (I'm a collector myself) as she waits for a new home. "

What a wonderful service to these young children that need a physical source of comfort. And please please please take a stroll through her gallery! She is obviously a multitalented artist! There are several of her paintings that I have to get prints of!! If you read Faith's About Me page you'll know as I have learned what a extraordinary giving person she is. I don't know her at all... but I do. I know that she has taken her own hurts and pains and poured herself into helping others heal. I wanted to make sure I shared with you the outfit of the week. This one is just SO SO cute!! I don't know about where you are but the cold weather just came in so fast for us. Jasmine was thrilled because it was cool enough to wear her new Varsity Star Outfit (link):

The jacket is made in traditional fashion with white "leather" sleeves. My tomboy Jazzy just loves it, especially since her varsity letter is sewn on the back:

Posting a little late tonight, it's been a BUSY day!!

Here are the dolly news items that I found for this week!

Barbie is getting a new store in the Mall of America. The store will be opening in October2009 and is expected to stay open until March 2010! Maybe I'll make it there before it closes!!

What's the hoopla about??? People have suddenly started making a fuss over Gwen, one of the 2009 American Girl dolls. It turns out Gwen and her mother are homeless after being abandoned by her father. The public outcry is because not only is AG charging $95 for this doll, none of the money is going to HELP the homeless? What are your thoughts on this doll and her story?

Speaking of costly dolls, you HAVE to check out the new BJD's that have been released for the Angelic Dreamz store! They are HOT!!

I dont' see one making it into my collection anytime soon but they sure are yummy!

It's party time at Toys R Us!! They are having a Moxie Girl Party this Saturday from 12-2! Lots of fun games and giveaways. Outfit of the week 9/28

With back to school, it also means back to Girl Scouts, Brownies and Daisies for our community minded girls. Emily Rose has the perfect matching outfits for your little trooper. Here are Aggie and Addy modeling the Brownie Skirt Outfit and Green Junior Girl's Club outfits:

Hello everyone!

I'm going to share with you some news from around the doll world!

I'm really loving the new Moxie Girls by MGA. They are cute and not sleazy like the Bratz dolls. I like their trendy outfits and the fun themes. This is my Jammaz Sasha. Isn't she gorgeous?

There's even a little inspirational hang tag and the back of the box has a positive message for girls. Did I say I really like these dolls???

Monday Outfit of the Week!

Whew! It's so nice to be back and blogging again. I missed it but just didn't seem to have the time and/or patience to do good posts. But we are back now and hopefully we'll stay on schedule!

Now for the outfit of the week. I have to say I fell in love with this dress the minute I saw it. It's a beautiful pink satin gown with a lace overlay. The overlay has such gorgeous flowers embroidered into it! Anyway, they say a picture is worth a thousand words so here is Ginger modeling the embroidered bow dress

Isn't it gorgeous. Ginger looks like she's going to a party or a prom! Here's a close up of the beautiful detail!

I matched this dress up with these adorable pink bow shoes!

I know you will love this dress as much as I do! Oh and it washes really easy, we had an incident with red juice. I washed it in cold water with a touch of dish detergent, rinsed it really well and laid it flat to dry. No sign of the juice!!
